Food Processing Industry

Food and beverage equipment needs components that resist corrosion, stay clean and run reliably. STR Industries supplies stainless steel, ceramic and glass balls and grinding media for food processing machinery, from grinding mills to pumps, valves and conveyors.

How Balls Are Used in Food Processing

Grinding media. Balls break solid ingredients into powders and pastes. A common example is grinding cocoa beans for chocolate and cocoa products.

Valves and pumps. Stainless and ceramic balls seal check valves and metering pumps that handle liquids, sauces and cleaning fluids.

Bearings and conveyors. Corrosion-resistant balls keep bearings and ball transfer units moving in wash-down areas.

Heat transfer. Balls can be used in heat transfer applications, depending on the process.

Materials for Food Applications

Stainless steel is the most common choice thanks to its corrosion resistance. Ceramic balls (zirconia and alumina) are hard, non-magnetic and resist chemical attack, which makes them useful as grinding media where metal contamination must be avoided. Glass balls suit some valve and laboratory uses.
